Species planted

Siberian larch

Larix sibirica · Шинэс

Dominant boreal-forest species in Mongolia. Cold-hardy to −40 °C, deep-rooted, naturally resistant to surface fires once mature. Accounts for the majority of Mongolia's 12.5 million ha of forest cover.

Scots pine

Pinus sylvestris · Нарс

Tolerant of sandy and rocky soils. Used at the southern boundary of the Khentii forest belt where shallow soils make larch impractical.

Asian white birch

Betula platyphylla · Хус

Fast-growing pioneer species. Planted in mixed cohorts to provide windbreak before the slower-growing larch reaches canopy height.

Where

Khovd aimag, western Mongolia. Specific GPS coordinates issued with the survival report.

Planting method

Spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) planting windows. Forest User Group teams hand-plant, fence the cohort against livestock, and water on a survival schedule. Sapling stock from the Mongolian Forest Research Association nurseries.

Audit

Year-1 survival census after the first growing season. Year-3 audit — the number that determines the cohort's success rating. Our floor is 70% survival at Y3; below that triggers free replanting.
