Green Shield Mongolia signs MOU with the Business Council of Mongolia

The Green Finance Initiative (GFI) — operator of the Green Shield Mongolia restoration platform — has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Business Council of Mongolia (BCM).

BCM represents more than 150 domestic and international businesses, investors, diplomatic missions and international financial institutions, and runs a Working Group on Sustainable Finance.

What it covers

• BCM will promote Green Shield Mongolia to its membership as a route for companies to fund tree planting and forest restoration.
• The two organisations will co-host at least two joint events a year, including side events at international forums such as UNCCD COP17.
• BCM will introduce Green Shield Mongolia to its international network, including partner chambers in Korea, Japan, China and Europe.
• Both sides will share practice on corporate sustainability and on the Corporate Income Tax treatment of tree-planting donations under Mongolian law.

Why it matters

Green Shield Mongolia records a GPS point for every tree at planting and commissions independent survival surveys at year one and year three. Where a tree has failed, it is reported and replaced. That documentation is what corporate funders are being offered.

The MOU is a non-binding framework with an initial term of three years. It was signed by Enkhtumen Tumentsogt, Chief Executive Officer of the Green Finance Initiative, and Suvd Nergui, Chief Executive Officer of the Business Council of Mongolia.
