Donation Receipts & Tax
How giving is recognised.
Every donation generates a digital receipt. Whether it unlocks a tax deduction depends on where you pay tax — here is what we know.
How tax-deductible giving works
After every donation we issue a digital receipt within 24 hours. Whether the receipt unlocks a tax deduction depends on where you (or your company) pay tax. We’ve spelled out what we know for the most common jurisdictions below. Your tax adviser is the final authority on what you can claim.
This page is general guidance, not tax advice.
What every receipt contains
Each receipt is generated automatically and emailed to the address you provided at checkout. It includes:
- Your donor name (individual or company) and address as entered.
- The donation amount in your billing currency, and the equivalent in MNT.
- The date of donation.
- A unique certificate / receipt ID (e.g. GFI-MNG-2026-014).
- The shield tier purchased and the planting region.
- Our registered name, NGO number, and address.
- A statement that no goods or services were exchanged for the donation, except for a digital certificate of negligible commercial value.
If you need a paper copy, a corporate-format invoice, or a re-issued receipt, email donations@greenshield.mn with your certificate ID.
By jurisdiction
🇲🇳 Mongolia
As a registered NGO under the Law on Non-Profit Legal Entities, donations to GFI may be deductible up to the limits set by the General Department of Taxation. Corporate donors should retain the receipt and reflect the donation in the relevant Schedule of the corporate income tax return.
🇺🇸 United States
GFI is a foreign NGO. Donations made directly to GFI are generally not tax-deductible for US donors under IRC §170. US donors who require a deduction should give through our US fiscal sponsor, Climate Allies Foundation, Inc. (a 501(c)(3); EIN to be confirmed at checkout). Use the “U.S. tax-deductible” toggle on the Donate page to route through the sponsor.
Once routed through the sponsor, you will receive a 501(c)(3) acknowledgement letter that meets IRS substantiation requirements (Pub. 1771).
🇬🇧 United Kingdom
UK taxpayers can give through our partner CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) International via their Charitable Giving service. This unlocks Gift Aid on eligible donations (HMRC adds 25p for every £1 you give, at no extra cost to you). Higher-rate and additional-rate taxpayers may claim further relief through Self Assessment.
🇪🇺 European Union
EU donors may be eligible for cross-border deduction under the Stauffer / Persche jurisprudence and your country’s implementation. Practical pathways vary — for Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and France we route through the Transnational Giving Europe (TGE) network for full local deductibility. Look for the “TGE-eligible” mark at checkout.
🇰🇷 Korea · 🇯🇵 Japan
Donations from Korean and Japanese donors are processed through our regional partners. Korean corporate donors may be eligible for the donation expense deduction; Japanese individuals may be eligible for the public-interest donation deduction (公益寄附金) where the recipient is recognised. Contact us for partner details before donating if a tax deduction is critical.
🌍 Elsewhere
If your country isn’t listed, the receipt we issue is still a valid record of donation. Many countries recognise donations to foreign NGOs working in environmental restoration — your local tax adviser is the best person to confirm.
Corporate giving & ESG reporting
For Corporate Grove (1,000-tree) and Adopt 0.1 ha tiers we issue an additional ESG Impact Statement suitable for inclusion in CSR or sustainability reporting under GRI 304-3, TCFD, or CDP. The statement includes:
- Number of trees planted, by species and aimag.
- Estimated lifetime CO₂e sequestration (using the Verra VM0047 methodology, conservatively discounted).
- Hectares of land restored.
- Forest User Groups engaged and direct-employment hours generated.
- Year-1 and year-3 survival rates against the ≥70% guarantee.
Note: the impact statement is a qualitative ESG document. We do not issue tradable carbon credits unless the donation is made under a specific carbon-credit MoU.
In-kind & non-cash donations
For donations of equipment, vehicles, nursery materials, or services we issue a separate in-kind acknowledgement that lists what was donated, but does not assign a monetary value (per IRS Pub. 1771 and HMRC guidance — valuation is the donor’s responsibility). Please contact donations@greenshield.mn before sending in-kind goods.
Records you should keep
- The receipt email (the certificate ID is your reference number).
- The bank or card statement showing the payment.
- For donations over USD 250 / GBP 200 / EUR 200, retain a copy of the contemporaneous acknowledgement letter — for US donors this is required by IRS §170(f)(8).
We are required to retain donation records for 10 years for our own audit purposes. If you ever lose your receipt, we can re-issue it on request.
Refunds and amended receipts
If we refund a donation after a receipt has been issued, we will issue a void notice referencing the original certificate ID. If you have already filed a tax return claiming the donation, you may need to file an amendment. We can supply documentation to support your amendment on request.
Questions
Our Donor Care team is small but responsive. Email donations@greenshield.mn with your certificate ID and we’ll come back to you within two business days.
